Letter
and
Spirit:
The
conservative Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco has developed a new
document for Catholic high school faculty and staff clarifying that sex outside
of marriage, homosexual relations, the viewing of pornography and masturbation
are “gravely evil.”
Archbishop
Salvatore Cordileone’s document applies to faculty and staff at four Catholic
high schools: Riordan and Sacred Heart in San Francisco, Marin Catholic in
Kentfield and Serra High School in San Mateo.
It states that administrators,
faculty and staff “affirm and believe” the controversial statements, which will
be part of the faculty handbook.
There is a great deal of protest going on
regarding this document demanding a repeal of the document.
Jesus says, “ I did not come to abolish the
law but to fulfill them.” Jesus went about doing the necessary thing that is
fulfilling the spirit of the law: love of God and neighbor.
The rules,
regulations, structures and guidelines all must serve the law of love and if
these regulations undermine that Primacy of the Law of Love the end result will
be chaos.
Archbishop may have this intention of living up to the Church
teachings and dogmas.
Is it tempered with love of God and neighbor?
The
ordinances that the Lord wanted Moses to teach generations to come were one of
fidelity, commitment and a desire to live according to the will of God.
Israel
had an obligation to take ordinances from God for they were given a land, a
kingdom, a king, a prophet, a priest, a temple and everything they possessed.
Everything was a gift which they did not merit.
God was their "companion God"
every step of their rebuilding, renewal, restoration and redemption.
So the law
of love demands that we have an attitude of reverence and obedience to the
Law-giver God.
How often do we have this attitude of reverence and obedience to
the teachings of the Church that is based on the Law of Love which Jesus
embodied and embraced on the cross for us?
