Day 11:
March 15, 2014:
Yahweh is to be your
God.
At
the conclusion of the spiritual exercises for lent, Pope Francis gave thanks to
the Retreat Master by saying, “you have planted a seed in us. The Lord will
send us the rain to make the seed grow and bear fruit”. Love and respect for
the Word of God comes from a heart that has been broken and freed from
self-preoccupation and fear. This is the ‘big heart open to God’ and God’s own
initiatives. Once we are completely open to God, we are ready to imitate God
and to love as God loves, think as God thins, act as God acts, and treat others
as God would treat them. Jesus says be “perfect just as your heavenly Father is
perfect”. If we imitate this love of God then no one will be excluded from
God’s love whether divorced, separated, LGBT, etc. we are to love everyone. No
longer can we love only those with whom we are close and are bound in such a
way that we feel ‘safe’ with them. There cannot be barriers that we raise
between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Love does not create barriers but tears down walls
that separate. So Jesus holds us to a higher standard as imitators of His love
and His way. Are we really proud to be his people ‘peculiarly his own’? Are we
not called by God out of sheer mercy and not for any merit of our own? May we
make God proud by living lives worthy of our calling as God’s own sons and
daughters especially this season of lent.
God Bless you
always!
