Lenten Reflections: Twenty-Eight Day "The One They Want To Kill" Friday, March 20, 2015

“The One they want to kill!”

How does it feel to be targeted?

You are targeted when you are being harassed, ridiculed, taken for granted, ignored, downplayed, discredited and disowned by the very people who are supposed to be your protectors, saviors, guardians and leaders.

The Wisdom literature tells us: “Let us beset the just one, he sets himself against our doings… To us he is the censure of our thoughts. Merely to see him is a hardship”.

We see Jesus the just one being targeted to be killed by authorities for speaking out the truth.

He never backed out of his commitment to truth. He spoke the Word.

Jesus must have felt so lonely and isolated by people who hated him for challenging them.

Soon to be canonized Archbishop Oscar Romero challenged the Military junta for targeting the poor peasants and exploiting them.

He was targeted and eventually murdered by the military who had vowed to protect the citizens.

The season of lent is a time to acknowledge our own tendencies to ignore or taken for granted the ones who speak the truth and challenge us.

Let us not be silenced by threats.

Let us not hide because of fear of being unpopular.

Let us not to backtrack because we might lose our privileges and positions.

Let us also “go up” with Jesus.

Many a critics of St. Bernadette discredited and doubted her claim that Mary appeared to her.

Even her superiors described her as crude and ignorant peasant.

Once a man harassed and ridiculed her saying, “ The Lady had better teach you how to speak correct French” to which Bernadette replied: “ At least she did not teach me to laugh at ignorant people”.

If you are targeted and ridiculed

know that you are one with the

passion of the Lord whom we

 follow till death.
