Lenten Reflections: Sixteenth Day "REJECTED STONES" Friday, March 6, 2015

“Rejected stones”!

“House of Cards,” a political drama that is produced by Netflix, features Francis Underwood as the President of the United States of America.

Francis is always the winner and can never accept rejection, betrayal, humiliation or defeat.

He is truly a power hungry and ruthless politician who would accept the Old Testament God of Power and Might so he claims but ‘does not buy’ Jesus’ call of love and sacrifice.

For him Jesus is too weak and a symbol of defeat and rejection.

So Francis disgustingly spits on Jesus crucified.

We see the utter of rejection of Joseph by his greedy, jealous and angry brothers as well as the rejection of the son of the vineyard owner by the hired farm hands who are equally greedy.

The rejected ‘dreamer’ Joseph would eventually become the savior of his family during the time of famine.

The ‘rejected son’ Jesus would rise from the death to redeem Israel and the whole humanity.

So Jesus confidently quotes psalm 118 “ the stone rejected by the builders has become corner stone.”

The Way of the Gospels, the Scripture is full of stories of people rejected, abandoned, and forsaken by all and yet we see God siding with these very people.

God meets them where they are and do not leave them there but draws them to a higher place.

He does not leave them in the pit but throws his hands to pull us out of the miserable ‘pit’ we are in.

Joseph’s as well as Jesus’ story is one of apparent defeat but actually a story of hope, triumph and salvation.

Do we buy that story and take it to heart?

In moments of defeat and humiliation that is commonly never acceptable by our culture, can we learn to hold on for there is indeed a ‘crown awaiting us’ and live with steadfast faith and hope in the One who accepts and loves us all?
