Lenten Reflections... Honoring St. Joseph's Feast Day! Thursday, March 19th "A Great Model of Humility and Selfless Love"

Joseph

        the

           Just

              and

             Righteous

                      man!

The Gospel of Mathew portrays Joseph as an “upright man” meaning a just and

righteous man. Righteousness means the quality or state of being just or rightful or

acting in accord with the Divine or moral law. In every sense of the word Joseph

was a just man who is a role model for us all. A just man is a holy and merciful

person. In Psalm 15 we read about the just person: Whoever walks without blame,

doing what is right, speaking truth from the heart; Who does not slander with his

tongue, does no harm to a friend, never defames a neighbor; Who disdains the

wicked, but honors those who fear the Lord; Who keeps an oath despite the cost,

lends no money at interest, accepts no bribe against the innocent.”

Joseph is someone who lived a simple and pure life, who never dishonored his wife, one kept

the covenant with God even if it was a loss in the eyes of the world. He showed

mercy to his wife no matter what and cared for her out of his kindheartedness.

Joseph treated his spouse with respect, honor, love and care.

Indeed he protected  the holy family from all elements.

We need to imitate his righteous attitude

and value in learning to respect others. He followed the

divine law tempered mercy and

with human consideration for his wife.

My late father was named after Joseph. In every possible he tried to imitate Joseph’s virtues

like caring for our family,  working really hard to support us from the produce of the farm,

letting the children follow what God wanted of them, and in his last moments humbly

submitting to the will of God in enduring the suffering and illness.

He really wanted to go  home to God on March 19, the feast day of his patron saint but

died five days later. I look at  my dad as someone who clearly followed the virtues of

St. Joseph. So today as we  honor St. Joseph let us learn to imbibe his great

virtues of righteousness, justice, mercy and love in our own life.

St. Joseph pray for us!
