Ash Wednesday - February 18, 2015 - Lenten Meditations - Reflections - Growing Closer to Jesus through His Suffering

"Repent"

On this Ash Wednesday we enter into the holy season of lent, a season of grace, of hope and joy. We mark our foreheads with ashes proclaiming a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. The minister imposes the ashes with the words, “Repent and believe the Gospel”(Mark 1:15).

What do we think of when we hear the word “repent”?

Do we almost automatically think of our sins and bad habits, of the need to be sorry for our sins, of the hard work before us to break our bad habits?

The word literally means, “to think beyond the way we think now, to turn around and think in a different way”.

According to Fr. Michael Kelly SJ, “The call to repentance by Jesus, and the real call of Lent, is to take a new look at God, to refresh our image of him. It is to come to a vivid realization that God loves us now, as we are, and before ever we change.

The main thing in Lent is not that we should do things for God but that we should become more aware of how much God is doing for us.

Each day we want to see more and more that God loves us powerfully, unfailingly, permanently.

In the words of today’s first reading, we want to bring home to ourselves that God is all tenderness and compassion, rich in graciousness and ready to relent.

The real repentance of Lent is to turn and look into the eyes of Jesus and see there how much he loves us, how totally forgiving he is. It is to let God be God in every aspect of our lives. And from this new awareness of God’s love there comes the power to turn our backs on sin, to turn away from what is wrong and to embrace with our whole being all that is good.

How can we bring about this new awareness into our lives during this season of lent?

We must desire for a deeper spiritual breakthrough at this time.

To achieve this goal we embark on the spiritual practices of fasting, prayer and generous giving as instructed by Jesus in the Gospel. Jesus did not say “if you fast, if you pray, if you do almsgiving” but “when you do.”

These are not optional add-ons to our spiritual lives. Instead these vital practices help us break away from our self-centered and self-indulgent mindsets.

Self-denial multiplied by prayer and generous giving open our eyes to God’s love and our desire to care for other people.

According to St. Leo the Great, these practices will bring heavenly and earthly rewards like ‘deeper relationship with God, greater freedom from sin, and a renewed concern for the needs of the poor in our midst.’

So it is a time to break away from our routine to embrace such practices that will help us focus more on God than our ‘selfie’ world.

So are you ready for this journey to encounter the God of mercy in Jesus?

Wednesday, February 11, 2015 Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes!

Our Lady of Lourdes once told St. Bernadette:

"I cannot promise you happiness in this world,
  only in the next."

One can understand that true happiness can only be found living a life close to Jesus and the ultimate happiness is when we meet Jesus in heaven!

Take time to view the Song of Bernadette movie. Its a great
story and has many teachings which can help you grow in your spiritual life with Jesus.

Each time I've viewed the movie there's always a new understanding, a new message.

Litany of Humility
(composed by Cardinal Merry del Val)

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, hear me
From the desire of being esteemed, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being loved, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being extolled, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being honored, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being praised, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being preferred to others, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being consulted, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being approved, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being humiliated, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being despised, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of suffering rebukes, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being calumniated, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being forgotten, deliver me Jesus
From the fear being ridiculed, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being wronged, deliver me Jesus
From the fear of being suspected, deliver me Jesus
That others may be loved more than I, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That in the opinion of the world others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.
That others become holier than I, provided that I become as holy as I should.  Jesus grant me the grace to desire it.

PRAYER TOSAINT MICHAEL
THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen..

An Act
of
Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for

having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins,

because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell;

but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,

Who are all good and deserving of all my love.

I firmly resolve,  with the help of Thy grace,

to confess my sins,  to do penance,

and to amend my life.  Amen.

Christ Candle of Hope Prayer
God, our loving Father, you sent your Son,
Jesus Christ, into this world to counter
all the forces of evil: sin, suffering and death,
and to overcome evil with the force of good;
hatred with the power of love,
your great love for us in Jesus.

Help us never to curse the darkness,
but to join with you in bringing
Your light into this world,
the light that is your Son,
born of the Virgin Mary, in Bethlehem.
Help us to be instruments of your light
and love by doing one special act of kindness
or by being your special instrument
of reconciliation this New Year.

May the Christ Candle we light symbolize
our desire to bring light into a world of darkness
and hope into a world of despair.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Holy Face of Jesus

O Blessed Face of my kind Savior,
by the tender love
and piercing sorrow
of Our Lady as she beheld You in
Your cruel Passion,
grant us to share in this
intense sorrow and love
so as to fulfill the holy will
of God to the utmost
of our ability.
Amen.

Feast day: February 10
Death: 543
Image of St. Scholastica

St. Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict, consecrated her life to God from her earliest youth. After her brother went to Monte Cassino, where he established his famous monastery, she took up her abode in the neighborhood at Plombariola, where she founded and governed a monastery of nuns, about five miles from that of St. Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns. She visited her brother once a year, and as she was not allowed to enter his monastery, he went in company with some of his brethren to meet her at a house some distance away. These visits were spent in conferring together on spiritual matters. On one occasion they had passed the time as usual in prayer and pious conversation and in the evening they sat down to take their reflection. St. Scholastica begged her brother to remain until the next day. St. Benedict refused to spend the night outside his monastery. She had recourse to prayer and a furious thunderstorm burst so that neither St. Benedict nor any of his companions could return home. They spent the night in spiritual conferences. The next morning they parted to meet no more on earth. Three days later St. Scholastica died, and her holy brother beheld her soul in a vision as it ascended into heaven. He sent his brethren to bring her body to his monastery and laid it in the tomb he had prepared for himself. She died about the year 543, and St. Benedict followed her soon after. Her feast day is February 10th.

NEWARK (AP) — An American nun credited with curing a boy's eye disease moved a step closer to sainthood Saturday in what church officials said was the first beatification Mass held in the United States.
A beatification Mass for Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, who died in 1927, was led by Cardinal Angelo Amato at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. Beatification is the third in a four-step process toward sainthood.
Demjanovich is credited with curing a boy's macular degeneration in the 1960s, the Archdiocese of Newark says. The boy, Michael Mencer, was given a lock of the nun's hair and prayed to her. The effects of the eye disease soon began to fade, Roman Catholic Church officials say.
"Within a period of six weeks, it was totally reversed," said Sister Mary Canavan of the Sisters of Charity, the order to which Demjanovich belonged.
Mencer, who is now 58 and lives in Nebraska, and members of the Demjanovich family were among the hundreds of clergy members, nuns and worshippers who attended the beatification Mass. Mencer said he was happy that the New Jersey nun was getting the recognition she deserves.
"I was dug in thinking, this was going to take 100 years," he said.
Mencer also reflected on the moment when he first realized his eyesight was improving.
"I was walking and I looked up, and I thought I was looking at the sun because at first it was just the light," he said. "Then I was able to focus on the sphere and I thought 'oh, that's the sun' but it didn't hurt, I didn't tear up or anything and then I looked back down and there it was, the hair."
Mencer said he returned home and handed the hair to his mother.
"And then I just went out to play," he said. "I actually ran, it didn't dawn on me then. I just ran to my friend's house."
Mencer's younger brother, Mark, said he was thrilled to attend the Mass.

"This is something that's been in the making for decades," Mark Mencer said. "My mother has been in contact with Rome for a long time. I'm glad to see such great success come from this."
Mark Mencer, who now lives in Las Vegas, said he was about 4 years old when his brother's vision began to improve.
"I heard the stories including the one of him walking into a tree because he couldn't see so well," he said. "It's amazing because he had no medical intervention. It's a true miracle of God."
The beatification comes less than a year after Pope Francis certified Mencer's improved eyesight as a miracle, though church officials started the process in 1945 when the bishop of Paterson, N.J., began studying Demjanovich's life and virtues, according to the Sisters of Charity.
Demjanovich was born in Bayonne, N.J., southeast of Newark, and was a Sister of Charity for only two years before succumbing to complications of appendicitis at age 26. During her short time in the order, she was best known for her virtue and her mature writings. At the time, students also noted that whatever was said in confidence to her was not spoken to anyone else, Sister Diane Collesano said.
"The sisters saw in her that a person who had insights far beyond the average 20-some-year-old person," Collesano said.
Beatification requires evidence of one miracle that happened after the candidate has died and as a result of a specific plea to the candidate. Sainthood requires a second miracle, though candidates deemed martyrs need only one for canonization.

Traditionally, beatifications have taken place in Rome. But several years ago, Pope Benedict XVI said beatifications could take place in the country and diocese from which the blessed person came.

Image of St. Apollonia

St. Apollonia, who died in the year 249, was martyred for not renouncing her faith during the reign of Emperor Philip. The account of the life of St. Apollonia was written by St. Dionysius to Fabian, Bishop of Antioch. Apollonia had all her teeth knocked out after being hit in the face by a Christian persecutor under the reign of Emperor Philip. After she was threatened with fire unless she renounced her faith, Apollonia jumped into the flames voluntarily. She is considered the patron of dental diseases and is often invoked by those with toothaches. Ancient art depicts her with a golden tooth at the end of her necklace. Also in art, she is seen with pincers holding a tooth.
