Tomb
of silence!
How
many times in our life we have experienced a devastating loss, death of a loved
one, and after we have said our final good bye we return to a time of utter
loneliness and quiet! In our younger days, we were not allowed to talk after 3pm
on Good Friday until Saturday night and even if we did it is supposed to be in
soft voice.
The in-between time, between life and death was given to us to take
in the loss and appreciate all that the Son of God has done for us. This is to
know that death is not the end for God but just a beginning.
“Unless a grain of
wheat falls to the ground it remains a wheat” and if it falls it will produce
fruit, fruit of a new life, fruit of resurrection, fruit of triumph over sin
and death.
No new life can emerge and no conversion or awakening can happen
unless we know how to ‘go under’ just as Jesus did.
We go under, to shackles of
death, to emerge with a new vigor and vitality.
In silence and in ‘going under’
God will be doing the unthinkable, unbelievable and unimaginable in us and
around us.
“I will make all things new!”
Can we wait in silence for that grace
on this Holy Saturday?
This prayer by Kathleen Norris beautifully summarizes
this mood of the day:
“We praise and thank you, Lord, for the uncertain,
in-between times in our lives when we can be still and know that you are God.
We thank you for the hidden wonders of each day.
We thank you for your
kindness, great and small that serve to bring your kingdom.
We thank you for
your patience with our weakness, for being willing to work in and through us in
ways we don’t understand.
We praise and thank you for your emptiness, which
will one day be filled with your love.
We thank you for the silent wonders you
work in us, preparing us for a life that will find its completion in you”. Amen
